Comprised of pianist Michael Boyd, violinist Merwin Siu, and cellist Amy Chang, the Toledo Trio performs traditional and contemporary literature for piano trio. The members are all faculty at the University of Toledo. Boyd, active as a soloist, has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Dearborn Symphony and the Eastman Chamber Orchestra. Chang is Associate Principal Cello of the Toledo Symphony, and Siu is Principal Second Violin of the Toledo Symphony. Performing with the trio this year is clarinetist Jocelyn Langworthy also of the Toledo Symphony.

The City of Defiance will be recognizing Charlie's Down Under. The performing artist will be Gene Parker, Jazz Pianist. Program is free and open to the public.
September 23, 7:30 p.m. ~ The GeezeCats, Historic Valentine Theater
Harmony and hilarity is what you get with the GeezeCats. Presenting a mixture of doo-wop and rock 'n' roll, the GeezeCats is a quartet of veteran musicians - seasoned players with uncommon vocal capabilities. Featuring the songs of the pre-Beatle days of the late '50's and early '60's, along with improv-style comedy, this band is a must-see.

This tour focuses on historic churches and two other buildings with religious connections in the central part of Defiance, Ohio. Churches and buildings featured include St. Paul's United Methodist, St. Mary's Catholic, St. John's Catholic, St. John Lutheran, Church of the Brethren, Grace Episcopal, St. Paul Lutheran, First Presbyterian, the Masonic Temple, and the Arts & Media Center.

Fans of Nat King Cole and this trio will enjoy the vocal artistry of Joe Bourne in "Cole Remembered." Using arrangements transcribed from original recordings, Bourne takes the audience down memory lane with such favorites as "Nature Boy" and "Mona Lisa." Bourne's elegance, swing and virtuosity pay tribute to this all-time jazz and pop great. This concert is co-sponsored by the Schomburg Series and is part of Defiance College's 2010 Homecoming activities.

October 24, 7:00 p.m. ~ Duo Allant, Sunday at the Center, Arts & Media Center
Kathryn Umble, flutist, and Francois Fowler, guitarist, form an unusual instrumental duo whose name means "two going forward, continuing to grow." Both hold faculty positions at Youngstown State University. Their repertoire includes traditional and modern works in varied styles. Umble has presented recitals throughout the United States and Europe and has performed with many notable orchestras, including the Toledo Symphony. Fowler, the recipient of several important musical awards, has also performed widely in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Duo pianists Amy and Sara Hamann have been praised as having "the eloquence and ability to maintain their audience under their powers." Natives of Minnesota, the two have been recognized internationally and have performed at many important venues such as the Chautauqua Institution, the Oslo International Music Festival, and the Quebec International Duo-Piano Festival. They have performed on national and international radio, including NPR's "Performance Today" and "Studio 360." Among the many honors they have won was the Absolute First Prize in the Frederyk Chopin Concorso Pianistico Internazionale in Rome. This concert is co-sponsored by the Schomburg Series.

January 13, 7:30 p.m. ~ The Jack Schantz Quartet, Historic Valentine Theater
Jack Schantz, who has performed as a trumpet soloist with the Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Woody Herman orchestras and recorded with jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, has devised a relaxed, intelligent approach to music. His swing is subtle, yet unrelenting, and his improvisations are gracefully bouncy. Schantz and his quartet demonstrate mastery of the improvisatory skills of modern jazz.

Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn have performed together for over twenty-five years. Both studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Salzedo School in Camden, Maine. They began playing together to promote the music of Carlos Salzedo, along the way uncovering a number of his unpublished duo harp works. They have performed at conferences of the American Harp Society and the World Harp Congress and have given concerts and master classes throughout the United States. Lendrim is Principal Harpist with the Toledo Symphony, and Guinn holds the same position with the Akron Symphony.

Always a favorite with Defiance audiences, the Big Band Sound of the DCCB returns this season. Organized as part of the Defiance College Community Band, the ensemble is comprised of area musicians who share a love of big band music. Under the direction of Scott Rogers the band features the big band classics of Ellington, Miller, and Basie.

This innovative group of four musicians describes itself as "born of the idea that a chamber music ensemble built on friendship and mutual respect combined with expansive virtuosity and a love for communication will captivate an audience." Conundrum, whose name loosely translated means "puzzlement," is composed of Mary Elizabeth Southworth, soprano; Danielle Hundley, flute; Marianne Breneman, clarinet; and Philip Amalong, piano. Since their debut in 2005, this group has gained a reputation for audience-oriented new music played with "passion, humor, and conviction."

Jug Band aficionados and neophytes alike are in for a treat as Louisville, Kentucky's Juggernaut Jug Band delights its audience with mind-blowing musicianship, incredible harmonies, and humor. A combination vaudeville act and musical American history lesson, their repertoire spans popular and obscure tunes from the 1920s through the 40s, traditional jug band fare, originals and even a few rock and roll classics. The Juggernaut Jug Band delivers a musical concert like no other.
